Ben Affleck Teeth Before and After: Veneers or Dentures?

Does Ben Affleck wear dentures, and did he really have his teeth fixed for Armageddon? Those two questions drive most searches for Ben Affleck teeth. The second has an answer in his own words: in an Entertainment Weekly interview, reported by Entertainment Tonight in January 2022, he said the film’s makers “made me fix my teeth and work out and be sexy”. About dentures there is no public statement from him.

In this article from Prof Clinic we look at what Affleck and director Michael Bay have said about the Armageddon teeth, how dentures differ from veneers, and what to know before front teeth are covered with veneers or crowns.

What Did Ben Affleck Say About Fixing His Teeth for Armageddon?

Affleck told Entertainment Weekly that Michael Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer pushed him to fix his teeth, get fit and look the part. Entertainment Tonight published his remarks on 13 January 2022.

Bay told the same story from the director’s chair. On the Armageddon DVD commentary, quoted by The Ringer on 2 July 2018, he said Affleck “kinda had these baby teeth”, that the production paid for “a set of $20,000 pearly white teeth”, and that his own dentist kept Affleck in the chair for a week, eight hours a day.

Neither man says what the work was, and Affleck has never named the treatment. What the record confirms is that his teeth were worked on for the film, not which method was used.

Does Ben Affleck Wear Dentures, and How Do They Differ From Veneers?

No public statement from Affleck mentions dentures, and the quotes reported from him and from Bay do not use the word. We have also left out dentists’ opinions on his photos, because a photo shows what a smile looks like, not why.

Dentures or Veneers: What Is the Difference?

The American Dental Association describes dentures as removable devices that replace missing teeth, and veneers as custom-made coverings that sit on the front surface of teeth you still have. The two solve different problems:

  • Dentures: a conventional full denture is placed after the remaining teeth are removed and the gums have healed, which can take several months. New ones feel awkward for a few weeks, and the dentist adjusts the fit at follow-up visits.
  • Veneers: they improve teeth that are chipped, stained, crooked or misshapen, and can mask gaps. They are bonded in place and cannot be taken out.

So the question to ask is simple: do you have teeth to cover, or teeth to replace?

What Should You Know Before Veneers or Crowns on Front Teeth?

The ADA lists two main materials. Porcelain is a thin, custom-made shell that is strong, long-lasting and natural-looking, but costs more. Composite is tooth-coloured filling material bonded to the tooth, which may need less enamel removal and fewer visits and is easier to repair, but resists stains and wear less well.

Veneer treatment cannot be reversed, because enamel is removed to place the veneer. The Cleveland Clinic describes two office visits for traditional veneers, with the dental lab usually needing a few weeks in between, and a lifespan of 10 to 15 years with proper care. It also lists some loss of natural enamel and more sensitivity to heat and cold, and notes that the tooth underneath can still decay.

Veneers do not suit everyone. The ADA says people who clench or grind their teeth, or who have a deep overbite, may not be good candidates, and untreated decay or gum disease must be treated first. It also advises that only a licensed dentist should place veneers, and urges caution about “veneer technicians”.

Once the work is on, care is routine:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between the teeth daily, because cavities can still form under or around a veneer.
  • Avoid biting nails or hard objects, and wear a mouthguard for sport.
  • Limit coffee, tea and red wine, which stain.
  • Skip whitening products, which the Cleveland Clinic says can scratch veneers.

Ben Affleck’s Teeth: Your Questions Answered

1. Did Ben Affleck get his teeth fixed for Armageddon?

By his own account, yes. He told Entertainment Weekly that the film’s makers made him fix his teeth, and Michael Bay’s commentary says the production paid for the work.

2. Does Ben Affleck wear dentures?

There is no public statement from him saying so. Dentures replace missing teeth, and the remarks reported from him and from Bay don’t describe that.

3. Does Ben Affleck have veneers?

He has never said which treatment he had. A photo shows how a smile looks, not what is behind it.

4. How long do veneers last?

The Cleveland Clinic gives 10 to 15 years with proper care. The ADA adds that a veneer may chip, crack, wear down or loosen over time.

Medical note: Interviews and photos can’t show whether any treatment lies behind a smile. Ben Affleck has no known connection to Prof Clinic, and his dental appearance should not be read as a Prof Clinic case.
