Why do Roberto Firmino’s teeth look so white, and did he have veneers? Those two questions drive most searches for Roberto Firmino teeth. The first has an answer from the dentist who did the work: Robbie Hughes told BBC Sport, as Empire of the Kop reported in April 2019, that Firmino “just wanted a new smile” and asked for a shade beyond the whitest on the chart. About veneers there is no public statement from Firmino, and none of the dentist’s reported quotes names them.
In this article from Prof Clinic we look at what the dentist said, how Jurgen Klopp’s account differs, what a veneer procedure involves, how a shade is chosen and how long veneers last.
What Did Firmino’s Dentist Say About His Smile?
Hughes, a Liverpool dentist, said Firmino came to him wanting a new smile. The shade chart runs from 4 down to 1, with 1 the whitest, and Firmino asked for “maximo”, a colour beyond one, which Hughes said the practice created for him.

Planet Football, in an interview published in September 2023, dates the work to 2015, the summer Firmino joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim, according to the club’s website. Hughes told it that Firmino “wanted extra white teeth, so we worked to make that happen for him”, and that Firmino and Philippe Coutinho were among the first players to have work done, with smile makeovers that were “very noticeable”.
What the quotes leave out is the method. Hughes spoke of a new smile and a custom shade. He did not say how many teeth were treated, or whether the work was veneers, bonding or whitening, and Firmino has not described it himself.
Did Klopp Go to the Same Dentist?
Hughes told BBC Sport that Klopp contacted him after seeing Firmino’s new teeth, and that Klopp liked them but wouldn’t want to go quite as white, as Goal reported in October 2020. Klopp gave a different account on Soccer AM: “It was not that I saw Bobby Firmino’s teeth and went ‘I want them'” He described a long procedure and said that when he looked in the mirror his teeth were “really small”. The two versions stand side by side.

Do Firmino’s Teeth Show Veneers, and What Does the Procedure Involve?
Hughes described extra white teeth and a custom shade. Veneers, bonding and whitening can all produce that look, and a photograph can’t tell them apart, so the veneer question stays open until Firmino or his dentist answers it. We have left out dentists’ opinions on his photos, because a photo shows what a smile looks like, not why.

What Does a Veneer Procedure Involve, and What Should You Settle First?
The American Dental Association describes veneers as custom-made coverings that, unlike a crown, cover only the front surface of a tooth. For a porcelain veneer, enamel is removed, an impression or 3D scan goes to a lab, you may wear a temporary, and the final veneer is bonded on. A composite veneer is sculpted directly on the tooth and hardened with a light, which is easier to repair but not as stain- or wear-resistant. Because enamel is removed, the ADA says the treatment can’t be undone. Before you start, settle four things:
- Gums and teeth: decay and gum disease are treated first, because veneers over unhealthy teeth may worsen existing problems.
- Grinding: tell your dentist if you clench or grind, or have a deep overbite, since the ADA says veneers may not suit you.
- Material: porcelain or composite, with the trade-off above.
- Provider: the ADA warns that unlicensed providers carry risks of infection and nerve damage.

How White Should a Smile Be, and How Long Do Veneers Last?
The ADA says picking the shade is part of the veneer process, chosen with your dentist to match your natural teeth. Firmino’s story shows how personal that choice is: he asked for a shade beyond the chart, while Klopp, by Hughes’s account, wanted something less white.
Plan on the shade staying as it is. The ADA states that whitening will not work on caps, veneers, crowns or fillings, and the NHS adds that whitening can only lighten the colour of natural teeth. If you want your own teeth lighter, that decision comes before the veneers are made.
The Cleveland Clinic puts the results of porcelain veneers at about five to 15 years. The ADA adds that a veneer can chip, crack, wear down or loosen, which means re-bonding, repair or replacement. Care is simple: limit coffee, tea and red wine, brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, clean between your teeth daily and wear a mouthguard for sport. Cavities can still form under or around a veneer, so regular check-ups matter.

Prof Clinic: Hollywood Smile in Istanbul, Turkey
Our Hollywood Smile treatments in Turkey are planned from 3D imaging and digital smile design, and E-max or zirconia veneers and whitening are done at the same clinic, so your case isn’t passed between providers. Our coordination team answers your questions on WhatsApp and handles follow-up once you’re home. Before recommending anything, we check:
| Factor | What we assess | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bite and grinding | How your teeth meet and whether you clench at night | Heavy grinding can chip or loosen veneers, and a deep overbite can rule them out |
| Gums and decay | Gum health and cavities, on examination and X-ray | Both are treated before anything is bonded on |
| Shade and shape | Tooth colour beside your natural teeth, and proportions against your face | You approve the planned look on screen before any tooth is prepared |
| Material | E-max or zirconia, matched to your bite | The right material depends on the teeth being covered and how you bite |
Every case is different, so we plan each one separately. If you’d like our opinion on your own mouth, send an X-ray or photos through our contact page, or see real cases in the Before & After gallery.
